Decorative plaster coverage varies more than most people expect. The same 25 kg bucket covers very different areas depending on grain size - a 2 mm grain uses roughly 40-70% more material than 1.5 mm grain. The calculator above gives you the right number. This page explains the formula behind it, covers the main texture types available in Chisinau, and helps you avoid the two most common mistakes: ordering too little (running out mid-wall) or too much (leftover buckets you cannot return).

How decorative plaster coverage works: grain size is everything

Decorative plaster (textured render) is a finish coat applied with a trowel and worked into a pattern. Unlike paint, it has real thickness - which means coverage is measured in kg per m², not litres.

The three main types you will encounter:

  • Bark effect (scoarță de copac / короед) - horizontal or vertical striations, the most popular facade texture. Available in 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm grain.
  • Pebble dash (granulat / барашек) - rounded aggregate, uniform look. Used for both facades and interiors.
  • Venetian plaster - a separate category entirely: very thin application, mineral filler, polished finish. Coverage rates are completely different.

Coverage by grain size:

  • 1.5 mm grain: 1.5-2.0 kg/m²
  • 2 mm grain: 2.5-3.5 kg/m², average ~3.0 kg/m²
  • 3 mm grain: up to 5 kg/m²

Always check the product datasheet - the figure printed there overrides any general estimate.

Quick example for 20 m² at 2 mm grain:

20 m² × 3.0 kg/m² = 60 kg, plus 10% wastage = 66 kg - that is 3 buckets of 25 kg.

The 10% wastage allowance is standard in construction estimates. It covers losses at corners, window reveals and any touch-up work.

Choosing and applying decorative plaster in Moldova

Facade vs interior

For exterior use in Moldova's climate - freeze-thaw cycles, summer UV - choose silicone or silicate render. Acrylic is cheaper but less durable on exposed facades over time. For interior use, acrylic or mineral render works fine.

Application temperature: +5°C to +30°C. In Chisinau this means practical working season is April through October. Applying in direct sun above 30°C causes the render to dry too fast and crack.

Priming is not optional. Without a compatible primer coat, the render dries unevenly and adhesion fails. Match the primer to the render type - silicone with silicone, acrylic with acrylic.

Available brands at Colorista.md: Supraten (local - Coroed-20, TINA), Baumit, Ceresit (Henkel CT35/CT60), Atlas, Knauf. All in stock or short lead time from our Chisinau warehouse.

Why order from Colorista.md

StialitGE SRL is a registered Moldovan company with a physical warehouse in Chisinau. Stock you see online is physical stock, not a drop-ship placeholder.

For contractors and individuals working in Moldova:

  • Coverage rates from actual product datasheets - not generic industry averages. If a product's datasheet says 2.8 kg/m², the calculator uses 2.8.
  • Full material bundle: render plus compatible primer plus finish paint from matched product families - no compatibility guesswork.
  • Delivery across Moldova - Chisinau, Balti, Cahul, Ungheni, Orhei and districts.
  • English-speaking support available for expats and foreign contractors working on projects in Chisinau.

Frequently asked questions

How much decorative plaster do I need per square meter?

It depends on grain size. At 1.5 mm grain: 1.5-2.0 kg/m². At 2 mm grain: 2.5-3.5 kg/m², average around 3.0 kg/m². At 3 mm grain: up to 5 kg/m². Always confirm with the product datasheet. The calculator on this page applies the correct rate automatically based on the texture you select.

How many 25 kg bags of textured plaster do I need for 20 square meters?

At 2 mm grain with an average rate of 3.0 kg/m²: 20 × 3.0 = 60 kg, plus 10% wastage = 66 kg. Divided by 25 kg per bag = 2.64 - so you order 3 bags. Always round up, not down.

What is the coverage of a 25 kg bucket of decorative render with grain 2 mm?

At the average consumption rate of 3.0 kg/m², a 25 kg bucket covers approximately 8-10 m² (without the 10% wastage allowance). With wastage included, plan for roughly 7-8 m² net coverage per bucket. The exact figure is on the product datasheet.
