Wood treatment - oils, preservers and protective stains

Wood asks for different care than plaster or metal. Colorista.md stocks 96 wood treatment products - decking and parquet oils, fungal preservers, coloured stains, dyes and cleaners.

Subcategories follow the work stage. For prep and base protection - fungal and woodworm preservers (Vidaron Sigillo, Aura Sauna) go first on bare wood. For penetrating finish - oils for decking, parquet and outdoor furniture (Vidaron, Polisan). For film finish - coloured stains that let the grain show through. Polish brand Vidaron is the segment benchmark, with certifications for ground contact.

Moldovan climate - summers above 30 °C, winters down to −15 °C, long autumn rains - means exterior protection needs refreshing every 1-3 years depending on the product. Interior parquet holds 5-10 years from one good application.

Oil (Vidaron, Tikkurila Valtti Decking) penetrates the wood and keeps a natural matt texture - no film on top. Stain creates a semi-transparent film and looks more saturated. For a deck under daily foot traffic - oil (easier to spot-refresh worn areas). For a fence or decorative panel - coloured stain.

Wood preserver and woodworm treatment (Vidaron Sigillo, Aura Sauna or equivalent) goes first on bare wood, before any finish. Then oil or stain. On old wood - clean visible mould with a hydroxide solution, then preserver, then finish.

Deck oil in Moldova holds 1-2 years under full sun and rain. Refresh is a thin coat without sanding - new oil bonds with old. Film-forming stain lasts 3-5 years but refresh needs light sanding (P150-180) before the new coat.

Dye is a penetrating colourant on water or spirit base, soaks into the wood without a film. Stain is dye + protective resin, builds a semi-transparent film. Pure dye needs a lacquer or oil topcoat for protection. Stain colours and protects in one step.

Stain colour depends on the wood (oak with rosewood reads differently than pine with the same rosewood). Get a sample or test on a board from your project. Clear stain keeps the natural colour but emphasises ageing.
