Mineral Wool Insulation Calculator: How Much Do You Need?

Mineral wool - also called stone wool or rock wool - is the material this page is about. Not XPS foam, not EPS boards. Just mineral (basalt) wool in slab or roll form.

The calculator works out volume in m³. That's the most honest metric: it doesn't depend on which brand you pick or what pack size they sell this week. Once you know the volume, you can convert to packs yourself once you're looking at a specific product.

Typical applications:

• Exterior walls and facades - 100 mm thick, density 80-125 kg/m³ for render systems
• Timber frame walls - 100 mm between studs, lower density 35-50 kg/m³
• Pitched roofs - 150-200 mm in one or two layers
• Floor decks and ceilings - thickness varies by design

The maths is genuinely simple. Memorise it once and you'll never need to ask again.

Formula: Volume (m³) = Area (m²) x Thickness (m)

Then add 10% for waste (15% for complex roof geometry).

Concrete example - a 20 m² exterior wall at 100 mm:

1. 20 m² x 0.10 m = 2.0 m³ of mineral wool
2. Add 10%: 2.0 + 0.2 = 2.2 m³ to order

For a pitched roof section of 30 m² at 200 mm:

1. 30 m² x 0.20 m = 6.0 m³
2. Add 15%: 6.0 + 0.9 = 6.9 m³ to order

Note: 100 mm = 0.10 m, 150 mm = 0.15 m, 200 mm = 0.20 m. Easy unit conversion that trips people up.
