Not sure how many cubic metres of mineral wool to buy? You're not alone. Most people either over-order and waste money, or under-order and make two trips to the warehouse. This calculator solves that with one simple formula: area (m²) x insulation thickness (m) = volume in m³. Add 10% for waste and you're done. Works for exterior walls, sloped roofs, floor slabs - any application where stone wool or rock wool goes between studs or battens.
What This Calculator Covers
Mineral wool - also called stone wool or rock wool - is the material this page is about. Not XPS foam, not EPS boards. Just mineral (basalt) wool in slab or roll form.
The calculator works out volume in m³. That's the most honest metric: it doesn't depend on which brand you pick or what pack size they sell this week. Once you know the volume, you can convert to packs yourself once you're looking at a specific product.
Typical applications:
- Exterior walls and facades - 100 mm thick, density 80-125 kg/m³ for render systems
- Timber frame walls - 100 mm between studs, lower density 35-50 kg/m³
- Pitched roofs - 150-200 mm in one or two layers
- Floor decks and ceilings - thickness varies by design
Brands available at Colorista: Rockwool, Knauf Insulation, Izovat, Technonicol.
The Volume Formula and Example Calculation
The maths is genuinely simple. Memorise it once and you'll never need to ask again.
Formula: Volume (m³) = Area (m²) x Thickness (m)
Then add 10% for waste (15% for complex roof geometry).
Concrete example - a 20 m² exterior wall at 100 mm:
- 20 m² x 0.10 m = 2.0 m³ of mineral wool
- Add 10%: 2.0 + 0.2 = 2.2 m³ to order
For a pitched roof section of 30 m² at 200 mm:
- 30 m² x 0.20 m = 6.0 m³
- Add 15%: 6.0 + 0.9 = 6.9 m³ to order
Note: 100 mm = 0.10 m, 150 mm = 0.15 m, 200 mm = 0.20 m. Easy unit conversion that trips people up.
Why Colorista.md for Mineral Wool in Moldova
StialitGE SRL operates a local warehouse in Chisinau. That means you see real stock levels, not catalogue pages. When the calculator tells you 2.2 m³, you can order it today and get delivery anywhere in Moldova.
Every calculation on this page uses actual product data - not generic industry norms. If a product isn't in stock, we'll say so upfront rather than take your order and call you later.
We stock Rockwool, Knauf Insulation, Izovat and Technonicol. Ask our team which density suits your specific application.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much mineral wool insulation I need?
Multiply the area in m² by the insulation thickness in metres. For example, 20 m² x 0.10 m (100 mm) = 2.0 m³. Then add 10% for waste on walls, or 15% for complex roof shapes. The calculator on this page does this automatically.
What thickness of mineral wool should I use for exterior walls?
100 mm is the standard for exterior wall systems in Moldova's climate - both for ventilated facades and render-on-wool systems. For pitched roofs, 150-200 mm is typical, often installed in two offset layers to eliminate thermal bridges.
How much extra material should I allow for waste when calculating insulation?
Add 10% for straightforward wall and floor applications. For pitched roofs with hips, valleys, or dormers, use 15% - the cuts are more complex and offcuts can't always be reused. The calculator includes this automatically.
