What we calculate
Openings (doors and windows)
This calculator gives you an exact figure - how many litres of lacquer to buy for your floor, stairs or furniture project. Enter your area, pick the number of coats, and the tool applies the real coverage rate of 9 m² per litre per coat, then adds a 10% buffer so you never run short mid-job.
Not sure how many coats? Three is the standard for parquet and hardwood floors. Two coats can work for furniture with light use. We stock Sadolin, Vidaron and Eskaro lacquers in Chisinau with same-day availability - so the figure you get here maps directly to what you can order.
What the calculator covers
The calculator handles interior and exterior wood lacquers - parquet floors, solid wood furniture, stairs, doors and decking. It works equally well for water-based acrylic lacquers and solvent-based polyurethane or alkyd products.
Coverage varies slightly by product viscosity and wood porosity, but 9 m²/L per coat is a solid baseline confirmed across the brands we carry. On raw, porous wood like pine or fir, the first coat absorbs more - budget for that first coat consuming 20-30% more than subsequent ones.
Quick example: a 20 m² living room floor, 3 coats:
20 m² x 3 coats ÷ 9 m²/L = 6.7 L, plus 10% waste = 7.4 L
That is the number to take to the shelf.
How to choose the right lacquer
Three main types cover most projects:
- Water-based (acrylic) - fast drying, low odour, good for bedrooms and children's rooms. Slightly less durable under heavy traffic.
- Alkyd/oil-based - deeper amber tone, more flexible film. Suits antique or character floors.
- Polyurethane (1K or 2K) - hardest film, best for high-traffic areas, kitchens, commercial spaces. 2K systems require mixing but last significantly longer.
For exterior decking or garden furniture, yacht varnish (lac iaht) handles UV and moisture better than interior grades.

Frequently asked questions
How many coats of lacquer do I need for a wood floor?
Three coats is the standard for parquet and hardwood floors. The first coat seals the wood grain and absorbs more product. The second and third coats build the protective film. For furniture with light use, two coats is often enough.
How much lacquer do I need per square metre?
At 9 m² coverage per litre, one litre covers 9 m² per coat. For three coats on a 20 m² floor you need approximately 6.7 litres before the 10% waste buffer, so buy 7.4 litres. The calculator above does this instantly for any area.
Water-based or oil-based floor lacquer - which is better?
Water-based dries faster and has lower odour - good for occupied homes. Oil-based and polyurethane products give a harder, more durable film and suit high-traffic floors. For most Chisinau apartments, a good 1K polyurethane water-based product is the practical middle ground.
Why does the first coat of lacquer use more product?
Raw wood is porous. The first coat soaks into the grain rather than sitting on top. This is normal - the first coat typically consumes 20-30% more than the second or third. The calculator's 10% buffer helps account for this variation.
