What we calculate
Openings (doors and windows)
Finishing putty is the last step before painting or wallpapering - it smooths out micro-irregularities and gives walls a clean, flat surface. Our calculator uses a conservative rate of 1.0 kg per m² per mm of thickness, so your estimate already includes a built-in safety margin. Enter your room dimensions, pick a layer thickness (typically 2 mm for finishing coats), and you'll see exactly how many kilograms and bags to order.
What Does a Finishing Putty Calculator Account For?
Finishing putty (also called skim coat or finishing filler) is applied in one or two thin layers - usually 1 to 3 mm per coat - directly over primed plaster or drywall. Its job is surface perfection, not leveling large bumps (that's what base coat filler is for).
Our calculator works with:
- Surface area in m² (walls, ceiling, or both)
- Layer thickness in mm (1 mm, 2 mm, or custom)
- Coverage rate: 1.0 kg/m²/mm, conservative estimate
- 10% waste allowance included automatically
Result is shown in total kg and converted into standard bag sizes so you can order without guesswork.
How to Calculate Putty Quantity: Formula and Example
The formula is simple:
kg = Area (m²) × Thickness (mm) × 1.0 kg/m²/mm × 1.1
Example - a 20 m² room with 2 mm finishing coat:
20 × 2 × 1.0 × 1.1 = 44 kg
For a 25 kg bag, that's 2 bags. For an 18 kg bag, that's 3 bags. The calculator shows both automatically.

Frequently asked questions
How much wall putty do I need per square meter?
At a 2 mm finishing layer, plan for approximately 2.0 kg/m² before the 10% buffer, so roughly 2.2 kg/m² with waste included. For a 1 mm coat it's around 1.1 kg/m². Use the calculator above for your exact area and thickness.
How many coats of putty do I need before painting?
Typically two coats of finishing putty: a first coat to fill larger surface pores, sanding after drying, then a second thin coat for a glass-smooth result. Prime the surface before the first coat for better adhesion and reduced putty absorption.
What does a 25 kg bag of finishing filler cover?
A 25 kg bag covers roughly 12-13 m² at a 2 mm layer thickness (based on 1.0 kg/m²/mm). At 1 mm it covers around 25 m². Always add 10% to your calculated quantity to account for waste and edges.
