Openings (doors and windows)
Enter your wall area. Get rolls. That simple. This fiberglass mesh calculator does the math before you order a single roll - including the 10 cm minimum overlap that most estimates skip. Every strip of mesh overlaps the next by at least 100 mm. Ignore that and cracks follow at every joint. The formula: wall area x 1.15 (overlap) x 1.05 (cutting waste). For a 20 m² facade that gives 20 x 1.15 = 23 m² of mesh, rounded up to the next roll. Most ETICS (wet facade) systems specify either 145 or 160 g/m² alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh - Ceresit, Baumit, Valmiera, and Supraten all name minimum overlap in their specs.
Which Density: 145 or 160 g/m²
Standard EPS insulation systems work fine with 145 g/m² mesh. Switch to 160 g/m² when you are applying mineral wool, reinforcing high-traffic zones (corners, window reveals), or following a system specification that explicitly requires the heavier grade. When in doubt, check your insulation system datasheet - every major brand lists the minimum mesh density for warranty compliance.
Why 1.15 and Not 1.10
The 15% overlap coefficient covers 100 mm side-to-side and end-to-end laps across the entire facade surface. A 10% factor only works if your cuts are perfect and you have zero waste strips. In practice, corners, reveals, and short-wall leftovers add up fast. The 5% cutting reserve on top of that accounts for trimming around openings and diagonal reinforcement at corners. Together: area x 1.15 x 1.05.
Roll Size and Order Quantities
Standard rolls are 1 m wide and 50 m long - that is 50 m² per roll. The calculator rounds up to whole rolls automatically. Ordering exactly to the calculated net area leaves you short once you account for actual site cutting. Keep at least one extra roll on site for repairs and touch-ups after the base coat cures.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate reinforcing mesh for a facade?
Multiply your total wall area by 1.15 to cover the required 100 mm overlaps, then multiply by 1.05 for cutting waste. Example: 20 m² x 1.15 x 1.05 = 24.15 m², rounded up to the next full roll of 50 m².
What is the difference between 145 and 160 g/m² mesh?
145 g/m² is the standard grade for EPS-based facade systems. 160 g/m² is used with mineral wool insulation, in high-load zones, or where the system manufacturer requires increased reinforcement. Always check your system datasheet.
How many square meters is one roll of fiberglass mesh?
One standard roll is 1 m x 50 m = 50 m². The calculator converts your required mesh area into whole rolls automatically.
Why does the calculator add 15% for overlaps?
ETICS wet facade systems require strips to overlap by a minimum of 100 mm at every joint. Across a full facade, this adds up to roughly 15% more material than the net wall area.
Which brands of fiberglass mesh are available?
Colorista.md stocks alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh from Ceresit, Baumit, Valmiera, and Supraten. All products are compatible with standard ETICS facade systems.
