A fifth-floor balcony can still be green.

Pots and planters turn small urban spaces - a Chisinau apartment balcony, a courtyard, a hallway - into living greenery without needing a garden. The key is matching the pot to where it'll live.

For balcony and outdoor use, frost resistance matters. Moldovan winters regularly drop to -10 degrees, and standard terracotta or untreated ceramic cracks on the first freeze-thaw cycle. Frost-rated plastic, resin or specialist frost-resistant materials are the right choice for outdoor use.

For indoor use, the priorities shift: aesthetics, size for the plant, and drainage. A pot without proper drainage holes lets water pool at the roots - that kills plants faster than almost anything else. Always check for a drainage hole or a matching saucer.

Balcony window boxes - long rectangular planters that sit on railings or on the floor. Good for petunias, geraniums, trailing plants. Weight matters: a medium box full of wet soil can reach 8-12 kg, enough to stress a thin metal railing.

In stock at Colorista - pots in multiple materials and sizes for balcony, garden and indoor use.

Pots made from frost-rated plastic, fibreglass or specialist resin handle Moldova's freeze-thaw cycles. Standard terracotta and untreated ceramic crack at the first hard frost. Check the label - frost-resistant products always state it.

Indoors - yes, to protect floors and furniture. On a balcony with good drainage - optional but useful. In the garden on open soil - skip the saucer, to avoid waterlogging at the roots.

Annual flowers like petunias or geraniums - 15-20 cm diameter. Perennials and small shrubs - minimum 25-30 cm. A pot that's too small limits growth and dries out fast in Moldova's hot summer.

For outdoors - usually better: lighter and frost-resistant. For indoors - depends on aesthetics. Ceramic is heavier and retains moisture a bit longer. Good quality plastic now looks very similar to ceramic and is more practical inside a flat.

Check the railing's load rating against the box weight with soil and plants. A medium window box full of wet soil can weigh 8-12 kg - enough to stress a thin metal railing. Floor-standing models with their own legs are a safer option if the railing is lightweight.
