Paint rollers in velour, microfibre and foam - Chisinau
A roller leaves texture on the wall. Or it doesn't. Depends on pile type, pile length and how fast you move.
Velour (6-10mm pile) - smooth surfaces, fresh skim coat, ceilings. Minimal texture, finish close to a brush. Good for thinned varnishes and medium-consistency acrylics. Loads less paint - needs recharging more often.
Microfibre (10-15mm pile) - versatile, works on medium-textured surfaces, plastered walls, tiles. Loads more paint and distributes it more evenly. Recommended for washable and standard acrylic paints.
Foam (polyurethane) - ultra-smooth surfaces: metal, lacquered MDF, chipboard. Leaves virtually no roller texture. Note: foam in contact with alkyd varnishes can partially dissolve - check compatibility with the manufacturer before use.
Pile length and surface texture. Smooth surface - short pile (6-10mm). Textured or rough plaster - medium pile 12-18mm. Long pile (20-25mm) - heavily uneven surfaces or decorative plaster.
Core material: plastic for water-based paints, metal for solvent-based. Standard width 180mm - walls and ceilings. Mini roller 50-100mm - radiators, profiles, narrow spaces.
Microfibre 12-15mm pile, 180mm wide, plastic core. It loads water-based paint well, distributes evenly and cleans out faster than long-pile velour. For a very smooth final coat, switch to 6-10mm velour on the last pass.
Yes, on smooth surfaces - MDF, primed metal, chipboard. Not ideal for plastered walls where foam can't fill small surface texture. Check compatibility on alkyd varnishes - some formulas partially dissolve polyurethane foam.
Usually pile too short for the surface texture, paint too thick, or rolling too fast. Try longer pile, thin the paint slightly, and apply with even pressure - don't press harder on the return stroke.
When pile wears uneven, when the sleeve sheds fibres into wet paint, or when paint stops distributing evenly after washing. A quality sleeve washed immediately after use lasts 15-20 applications.
50-75mm wide, short pile (6-10mm), metal or narrow plastic core to fit between radiator fins. The articulated-handle version makes reaching the back much easier.
